Best Clocks And Watches

A clock on a table

We all are fond of clocks and watches. While clocks add to the glamour of the house, wristwatches make our personality look more appealing. Watches are an essential part of our lives since we all have lives dangling on each second passing by. We schedule and prioritize our entire day according to the time table we set for us. However, does it make you wonder why does the clock hands are precisely at 10:10 as default? Often when we buy new watch pieces or clock sets, the default time setting is always 10:10. This arouses a lot of curiosity within me to find out the real reason behind it. There were a lot of myths and the truth far away from the myths. Here is what I found out,

Bursting The Myths

Myth number 1- A lot of people believe that the clock manufacturers deliberately set the timing as 10:10 as a tribute to Abraham Lincoln/ Martin Lurther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy. It is on the given popular belief that these three men were shot at precisely the same time. However, to burst the myth, the reality is far different. Lincoln died at 7:22 a.m after being shot the previous day at 10:15 p.m. Martin Lurther King Jr. was shot dead at 6:01 p.m and pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m., and lastly, John F. Kennedy passed away at 1 p.m after having fired at 12:30 p.m. These facts make it all clear about these false assumptions.

Myth number 2- There is another popular belief that the attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki happened at exactly 10:10. Hence, setting the time to it is an act of remembering the ones that died in the attack. However, according to facts, Hiroshima had the attack at 11:02 a.m by The Fat Man Bomb and the later by The Little Boy at 8:15 a.m. This certainly clears the doubts all in one.

Having 10:10 As Default Timing

Well, the actual reasons behind the setting the default timing at 10:10 for clocks and watches are entirely aesthetic. To begin with,

The hands, when placed in the setting of 10:10, don’t overlap each other. Thus, they are evident and visible, enhancing the clock design. Another reason is that the manufacturers’ logo is always under 12 on the clock face. So, setting the clock on the default timing shows the logo clearly. There is one more reason behind the setting. It states that such a setup is symmetrical to look. Thus, it appears more visually appealing to the buyers.

However, the myths have no relation to the facts as to why clocks and watches are at 10:10 as a default setting. Therefore, the next time you guy to buy a watch or clock, you will figure out the aesthetic reasons to make more sense. Have fun time-shopping next time!
